* The Colorado Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) has awarded Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) a grant providing homeowners in DMEA’s service territory a significant rebate to help offset the cost of installing a GeoExchange system. “GeoExchange”-- known technically as a ground-coupled heat pump--heats a home in the winter by extracting and compressing the constant temperature of the ground for very efficient comfort. In summer, the heat pump process is reversed, cooling the home by discharging heat into the earth.

“The rebates that we can now offer homeowners in our service territory because of this grant from the Governor’s Energy Office make GeoExchange very affordable for both new homes and for many existing homes,” explained Steve Metheny, DMEA’s assistant general manager.

According to DMEA’s estimates, these grant funds will help offset the cost of an additional 40 geothermal heat pumps. The rebate amount will vary according to the size of the geothermal system installed in a particular home, but is expected to range between $2,500 minimum to a maximum of $6,250. Funds must be applied for by year end and construction must have been completed by late spring 2011.

This new rebate, if taken together with a 30% federal tax credit on the systems and a rebate from Tri-State Generation and Transmission, DMEA’s wholesale power provider, greatly reduces the net cost of the systems, which are the most energy efficient and cost-effective to operate, according to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study. DMEA members will also take advantage of the co-op’s “loop tariff” program to further reduce the upfront cost of the earth-friendly technology.

“DMEA has a proven track record of installing GeoExchange systems and now also has smart meters installed to better monitor and study their energy consumption and savings,” said Francisco Flores, Renewable Energy Program Associate in the Governor’s Energy Office. “DMEA will therefore be a good partner with the state as we work toward our goals of saving energy, reducing pollution, advancing research, and maintaining and creating jobs.”

HELLO..from beautiful Western Colorado!
Let us show you how Geothermal Heating and Cooling is such a great way to positively impact the environment while doing the same to your wallet!!

Geothermal energy, or energy generated from the heat stored in the ground, is another up-and-coming alternative energy source. To harness this energy, consumers can install a heat pump in their yards to transfer heat from the ground to the house in the winter time, and divert heat from the house to the ground during the summer. It can also be used to heat water. The systems can usually pay for themselves after four to six years.

“Once you install the unit, it's going to save about 40 to 60 percent on your monthly heating and cooling bill," said Bridgette Oliver, marketing communications manager for ClimateMaster, a manufacturer of geothermal heat pumps. "It's using energy from the Earth that's already there, that's free."

Unlike solar and wind energy, geothermal energy works about equally well all over the country. You just have to have dirt!

Reduced Carbon Footprint... In addition to creating jobs, a rebate program and the ensuing installation of geothermal heat pumps would cut an average four metric tons of carbon emissions per year per unit, due to the high energy efficiency of geothermal heat pump technology. This means that for the average unit life of 24.4 years, 97.6 metric tons of emissions could be eliminated over the lifetime of each unit, and 234,240 tons over the lifetime of every 2,400 units sold through a state rebate program.

News from the Colorado "Governor’s Energy Office":

GEO Rebates Update
Beginning in the first quarter of 2010, the Governor's Energy Office (GEO) will be offering rebates for Colorado residents and businesses that install energy efficiency and renewable energy measures in their home or building.

Over the coming months, the GEO and 4CORE will release more information about specific requirements and rebate amounts.

The GEO rebates will not be retroactive.
This means that products purchased and measures installed before the GEO launches the program will be ineligible for rebates.

At this time, the GEO anticipates offering rebates for the following energy efficiency measures:
  • Energy audits
  • Insulation and air sealing measures
  • Duct sealing
  • Clothes washers
  • Dish washers
  • Refrigerators
  • Water heaters (gas tankless, gas high performance and gas condensing)
  • Furnaces (gas condensing)
  • Boilers (gas)
  • Energy monitors
  • ENERGY STAR New Homes (for homebuilders)
  • Solar Electric - Photovoltaic (PV)
  • Solar domestic hot water
  • Small wind
The rebates will be offered statewide on a first-come, first-serve basis through 2012 or until funds are exhausted, whichever occurs first.
